TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Residents in one north Toledo neighborhood are taking a stand against crime, and they went straight to the top with their concerns.

The Sky Cop surveillance camera at Lagrange and Huron is one of the only cameras in the neighborhood, but residents there say that's not enough. On Tuesday, they met with Toledo Police Chief Derrick Diggs, asking for more.

The residents are members of a community group called One Village Council, and live in the area bordered by Summit, Lagrange, Champlain and Bush streets. They told Chief Diggs about robberies, shootings and assaults that are plaguing their neighborhood.

"It's terrible," said Chuck Comstock. "It brings me and my wife to tears at night, you know, what we've seen."

The residents are asking for more cameras to deter crime. Chief Diggs reminded them that he only has so many resources, but gave them an answer they could live with.

"I won't commit to four. I'll commit to three additional [cameras]," Diggs told them.

Diggs promised new cameras would go up at Magnolia and North Ontario, Bush and North Ontario, and North Erie and Chestnut streets. He couldn't say when, but said it would be within six months.

Residents also want more officers patrolling in squad cars and on foot.

"I want people to be able to go out and sit on their porches, not being harassed, people being able to walk the street, go to the stores," said Sy Kreais, who has lived in the neighborhood for 53 years.

The chief said he doesn't have the manpower to bring a dedicated foot patrol to the neighborhood, but said he would look into it. He also offered the residents a challenge:

"The bottom line is it's a two-way street," he said. "We have got to work together…You have to be willing to be our eyes and ears."

Diggs also said the neighborhood is a lot safer than residents think it is.
