Major flooding in Pickens, Gilmer, Forsyth counties

PICKENS COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A flash flood warning is in effect for Forsyth, Pickens, and Gilmer counties.

In Forsyth County, the southbound lane of Post Road (Hwy. 371) between Majors Road and Vickery Creek Middle School is currently closed.  The roadway was washed out as a result of last night's storms. The northbound lane is open.

The flooding is a result of water overflow from nearby Vickery Creek.

In Gilmer County, deputies report major flooding issues along Riverfront Road off of Hwy. 52 East.

Deputies are reporting that water looks to be receding in the area of Hwy. 52 East between Turniptown and the Hwy. 52 ramp.

There is also a report of a mudslide in Pickens County.

A tow truck operator has pulled six submerged vehicles from flood waters as of 11:15 a.m.

On Grandview Road in Pickens County, rushing water carried two cars down a creek.  The drivers were rescued from their cars.

Georgia Power is reporting outages in the area.

  • Highway 136 east is closed to traffic.
  • Along State Road 136 in both directions road flooding was reported.
  • In Gilmer County: The bridge on Holt Road off of Clear Creek Road is completely washed out.

The Pickens Sheriff's Office is asking that people avoid this area and will provide additional information once they fully assess the areas.
