AR 12-year-old girl may win fight against brain-eating amoeba

Posted: Updated:
(WMC-TV) - An Arkansas girl may win her struggle against a potentially fatal brain-eating amoeba. Her family is calling it a miracle.

"We've had tears of ultimate joy. You just wanted to jump and down and scream hallelujah," stated mother Traci Hardig.

During a swim at a water park, the teen contracted the rare, but deadly brain-eating amoeba. Out of 128 known cases in the past half-century, only two patients have lived. Now, Kali might just be the third.

"It was so great and a wonderful feeling to see her breathing on her own...and looking at you and squeezing your hand," declared Hardig.

Doctors cannot yet say whether the brain-eating amoeba caused permanent damage to Kali's brain, but they are encouraged.
