Has Cleveland's rape rate gone up?

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Cleveland Police are reporting the number of rape cases has increased compared to this time last year but counselors with the city's Rape Crisis Center say the number of sexual assaults might not have gone up but instead more people feel comfortable about reporting the crime and here's why.

One of the counselors said that it is their belief that with so much news coverage of sexual assaults in our city, people are realizing that they are not alone.

That includes cases like Ariel Castro.  Reports show that when serial killer Anthony Sowell's 11 victims were identified, reported rape cases shot up 30 percent.

It was also stated that the same can be said of disgraced football coach and convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky.  The Cleveland Rape Crisis Center said they saw a 300 percent increase in the number of men seeking help.

One of the nation's largest rape prevention networks reports one in five women in Ohio and one in 71 men will experience rape at some point in their lives but still more than half of those crimes will go unreported.
