How many travelers are busted for packing heat?

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Recent cases led 19 Action News Reporter Ed Gallek to investigate.

How many guns are police seizing at the airport?

Most people would consider it common knowledge not to take a gun to the airport but some people don't seem to think there's anything wrong with it.

After a little digging, we discovered that usually when travelers are busted with guns at terminal checkpoints they are loaded.

How often? We filed a special records request that shows so far this year; Cleveland Police have seized eight guns. For all of 2012 there were ten guns seized and in 2011 only two guns.

However this year's numbers include a strange case where three guns were found in a stolen car at an airport parking lot. The guns and the car were stolen from the Fort Wayne, Indiana Police Department--stolen a year ago.

As for the travelers packing heat, even if they get arrested—often times not much happens.

We checked three cases from this year in which all of the suspects went to a diversion program in order to stay out of trouble and get their records wiped clean.

Last year the Feds said on average, nationwide, agents found four guns in carry-on bags almost everyday.
