PARMA, OH (WOIO) -

A number of veterans who fought for this country say they've been in a major battle since returning home.

It's a battle for care and benefits that sometimes drags on for years.

"It's been horrible. Almost lost a house, almost lost everything waiting on VA Benefits," says Michael Johnson, a veteran.

Johnson is one of many veterans who say they've faced major delays dealing with the veterans administration.

"They didn't have to wait on us to go halfway around the world to go fight for our country. We shouldn't have to wait for the benefits that we deserve or that we fought for," said Johnson.

Congressman Jim Renacci hosted a forum Wednesday night in Parma.

Veterans had a chance to meet face to face with representatives from the Veterans Benefits Administration.

"It's a lot of paperwork, it's a lot of issues. Many of them are elderly, many of them waiting a year, two years. That's a problem," says Rep. Jim Renacci.

For many who attended the forum, the battle after the war has been trying.

"It's been terribly frustrating. I don't know how far I'm going to be able to go and how long I'm going to be able to last. It's frustrating because family, you know, we need to eat. We need to have a place to sleep," said veteran Otis Rodgers.

Johnson adds, "don't get me wrong. I love my country. If I had to do it all over again, I'd serve my country all over again. So don't get me wrong on that behalf. I just wish we would get what we were promised."
