CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

A 19 Action News investigation has found a candidate for Cleveland City Council owes thousands of dollars in unpaid property taxes.

Randy Willis is running in the Glenville area, and we found Willis owes about $5,000 dollars in taxes for a property he owns on Dupont.

He also owes more than $12,000 dollars for a property he shares with his live-in girlfriend on Somerset, he listed that house with the elections board.

Willis told 19 Action News, "I took care of my sick mother, took care of my son who got sick with cancer. I did the best I could with what I had to work with."

"All of us in this neighborhood are hurting for money. We see everybody around us working, and we're not," said Willis.

Willis is running against current Councilman Kevin Conwell.

Conwell points out, some of the area's biggest problems are rundown homes and unpaid taxes.

Conwell said, "How can you tell your constituents to pay their taxes when you don't pay yours? That's leadership."

Willis says his last regular job was at a supermarket, he's counting on winning the council seat to make money.

If not, he hopes to make money fixing up houses. He says he'll start this week with his own.
