Brush fire scorches 100 acres near Makaha

MAKAHA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Fire officials say a brush fire that broke out Saturday afternoon scorched about 100 acres and threatened homes near Makaha.

The fire broke out about a quarter of a mile past Keaau Beach Park just before 5 p.m. Saturday.

One structure was destroyed by the flames, but it apparently was vacant. The fire moved over a ridge line and buildings are no longer said to be in danger.

"Our only concern right now is that if the fire extends over the ridge to the Keaau Homestead Road area. There's only one finger that's going over to the ridge," said Honolulu Fire Department Spokesperson Capt. Robert Main.

Crews began Sunday morning by mopping up the edge of the ridge at 9 a.m. The fire continues to burn, but officials say it is not a threat. It is estimated to be 80 percent contained, and crews hope to put it out by nightfall.
