Troopers from the Ashland Post of the Highway Patrol are investigating a crash on IR 71 at Milepost 187 in Montgomery Township.

The crash caused the closure of IR 71 for about 8 hours Wednesday.

The roadway was closed due to clean up of debris from a commercial tractor-trailer fire involved in the crash.

The roadway was opened at 2:30 P.M. Wednesday in both directions.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:54 A.M.

A northbound 2006 International semi, driven by James Caple, age 51, from Ozark, Alabama, struck a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado parked facing southbound in a construction zone.

The pickup truck was occupied by James Helmke, 23, from Defiance, Ohio.  Jonathan R. Rains, 31, Metamora, Ohio, was struck by the pickup truck passenger door as he was getting into the vehicle.

The semi continued off the left side of IR71, striking the median cable.

After coming to its final rest the commercial vehicle and trailer caught fire.

The semi, owned by M1 Transport, LLC, out of Huntertown, IN, was transporting a load of plastic pellets to a destination in Connecticut.

All parties were treated at the scene for minor injuries and released.

Ashland City Fire Department, Ashland City EMS and Ashland County Sheriff's Office all responded to the scene for assistance. ODOT maintained traffic with temporary detours.

The crash remains under investigation.
