Mentor schools -- still sporting the academic with excellence

MENTOR, OH (WOIO) -

Mentor schools -- still sporting the academic with excellence rating from years past which is the same as an "A" got its new report card this week which was good enough to make headlines in the local paper.

Under this year's new system the district received an  "A" in something called the value added category which measures how much students have learned in one year regardless of their starting points.

The district also received an "A" in the standards met category comprised of 24 tests where grades 3-8 and 10 through 11 scored high in math, science, reading, and social studies.

Under the new grading system this district received four C's, three B's and two A's but the A's arguably could have come in the two most important categories.

The district received a "B" on its four year graduation rates and "C's" in categories related to student's growth and learning beyond one year.

Administrators admit there is room to improve and hope changes made this summer in staffing and instruction will help students improve in certain areas.
