CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Long time local rubbish hauler William Daniel, in an interview four months ago, claimed he runs a clean operation.

"You think you're operating a legal business," asked WOIO Chief Investigator Carl Monday. "Yea, quite sure," said Daniel. "I'm just a law abiding citizen."

Tuesday, Daniel's credibility came into question, after he was indicted by a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury for illegal dumping.

Mayor Frank Jackson announced the indictment, along with the Health Director, Safety Director and others at a City Hall News conference. Jackson said the police investigation into Daniel is part of a stepped up effort to prosecute illegal garbage haulers.

Reporter Monday is familiar with Daniel, questioning him back in April about his operation on E.79th St. Where he was storing dumpster's full of construction debris. Daniel admitted he was operating without the proper city occupancy permit.

More recently, both Monday and Cleveland Police caught Daniel dumping trash at an abandoned warehouse on E.131st. Records show Daniel dumped approximately 10 tons of debris there. That dumping lead to today's indictment.

For months, Monday has been exposing illegal dump sites in neighborhoods throughout the city. He found tens of thousands of tons of garbage dumped in warehouses and old construction sites instead of going to an approved landfill.

Last month, the EPA began cleaning up one of the sites, the old ACME manufacturing plant.

The Mayor says more prosecutions may be in the works.

If Daniel is convicted, he could face a fine of up to $25,000 and four years in prison.
