CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

On September 3, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald and U.S. Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach met during a countywide heroin initiative, to give an update on efforts in the county to raise awareness and reduce overdose deaths related to heroin, in partnership with law enforcement, Prosecutor's Office, the Board of Health, the ADAMHS Board, and MetroHealth.

Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson also released mid-year statistics on deaths related to heroin in 2013 in Cuyahoga County.

The following information is relevant through June 30, 2013:

• There were a total of 97 ruled cases in Cuyahoga County, 27 of which were female and 70 that were male.

• 27.84% of deaths are female.

• 86.6% of deaths are white.

• 47 heroin-related deaths were residents of the City of Cleveland, or 48.43%, and 46 heroin-related deaths were residents of suburban communities, or 47.42%. 4 heroin-related deaths were from outside of the county.

• Projections for 2013 are between 190-199 heroin-related deaths.
