Michael L. Nelson's Editorial

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

I'm Michael L. Nelson, Sr., founding president of 100 Black Men of Greater Cleveland.

150 years after President Lincoln stood at the base of the Emancipation Oak in Hampton, Virginia and 50 years after Dr. King reminded America that "we hold these truths to be self-evident… that all men are created equal," I fear that democracy is dying in black America.

And it's not the Ku Klux Klan, the Tea Party or republicans doing it. It's voter apathy. In city after city black voter turnout is but a shadow of what it once was. In Detroit, only 90,000 out of 700,000 voted in the mayoral primary.

Of the nine contested races for city council in Cleveland, six were in areas described as being predominately black.  Those six wards have a total population of 132,000 people. Only 7,464 voted. At this, rate Dr. King's dream will become a nightmare.

Why are we so willing to give away the only real power we have? The right to vote was bought with blood, sweat and tears and yet we kill it with disregard.

Thank you.
