Chud sends a message

Posted: Updated:

Cleveland (WOIO) - When it came to making tough decisions, the Browns of the past weren't exactly running at full speed. Anyone remember Romeo Crennel flipping a coin to decide between Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson?

Wednesday, Rob Chudzinski announced two tough decisions, and at least one of  them may be the biggest of his young head coaching career. By demoting Greg Little, Chudzinski sent a message, not just to Little but to his entire team, that he won't tolerate inconsistency, he won't tolerate losing, and he won't tolerate off-the-field issues. Davone Bess will replace Little in the starting lineup, and while Little will certainly get his share of playing time, the message had to be sent.

The other decision, starting third-string quarterback Brian Hoyer over Jason Campbell, really didn't surprise me, despite the fact that Campbell took all of the second-team reps throughout camp, and Hoyer didn't even dress for the first two games. The Browns know what they have in Jason Campbell. It's Hoyer who's somewhat of a mystery. And if he efficiently runs their system, he may stay in the lineup. Chudzinski had a chance to commit to Brandon Weeden when Weeden finally returns from his thumb injury, and didn't do it on Wednesday.

That may have been the easiest decision of them all.
