CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

A mother is speaking out with a message to every parent after a jury just convicted a man for raping her 11 year old son. That man was supposed to be mentoring the boy as a 'big brother'.

Paul Magnuson was convicted of rape, kidnapping and gross sexual imposition.

Magnuson had an upper level job with the TSA, the federal airport security force. But he also volunteered for the Greater Cleveland Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Magnuson took advantage of an 11 year old boy he mentored.

Mom looks back realizing she trusted Magnuson too much.

"I was fooled. Hopefully you follow your instincts. That's all i can say. Follow your instincts," said the mom.

The mother says her son kept the sex abuse a secret until Magnuson went to work in Germany.

We went to the headquarters for the Greater Cleveland Big Brothers-Big Sisters Organization. We wanted to find out if anything had changed as far as screening or monitoring volunteers as a result of this case. We were told someone would get back to us, but no one did.

Magnuson could be sentenced as soon as Monday by Judge Dick Ambrose.

"It's good to know we put a monster away," added the mom.
