CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The Cleveland Rowing Foundations' (CRF) 18th annual "Head of the Cuyahoga"  5k race was docked early today when two Canadian freighters, The Algoway and the Cuyahoga, owned by a shipping company from Canada, anchored parallel to each other in the Cuyahoga River, blocking the race path.

Rowers were only able to go 2100 yards out of a 5k that normally runs from the 490 bridge to the mouth of the Cuyahoga at Lake Erie.

The boats were parked just north of the W. 3rd Street bridge.

Aaccording Joanne Hull, treasurer of the CRF, they had permission from the Coast Guard to close the river today, and all boating and shipping companies were supposed to be notified of the closure 30 days in advance.

However, there was a miscommunication and notice was never sent out, according to the Coast Guard. They also said it could have been an unplanned stop.

CRF attempted to contact the ships over the radio but received no response. The Coast Guard is following up on the issue.

Rowers from the area and as from as far as Tennessee traveled to Cleveland for this event, costing on average $100 dollars per boat, not to mention hauling the equipment and lodging here in town.
