Middlefield school secretary accused of embezzling money

CHARDON, OH (WOIO) -

A Middlefield woman was indicted by the Geauga County Grand Jury Tuesday afternoon, accused of stealing money from A.J. Jordak Elementary School in Middlefield Village.

Shannon Mares was the school secretary.

The stolen money was school fees and the thefts happened in 2012 and in the spring of 2013.

Superintendent Matt Galemmo began his investigation in May and asked Mares to resign.

Officials say a total of $3429.oo in school funds was taken.

Mares is charged with tampering with evidence and theft. An arraignment date will be scheduled.

She faces up to four years in prison.
