CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The City of Cincinnati was awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPC) for its use of nearly 408 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually.

City leaders unveiled a sign Tuesday at the Cincinnati Zoo, which reads in part, "Welcome to a Green Power Community," and honors Cincinnati as the 2013 Green Power Community of the Year award winner.

The zoo is one of the largest green power producers in the region.

"EPA is pleased to recognize the Cincinnati, Ohio community with a Green Power Community of the Year award for its leadership and citizen engagement in dramatically increasing its use of green power," said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. "We applaud Cincinnati's residents, businesses, and organizations for choosing green power that will help address climate change and support a clean energy future."

According to officials, the city's green power use each year is enough to meet 14 percent of the community's purchased electricity use.

It's also equivalent to eliminating the carbon dioxide emissions of nearly 6,000 cars per year.
