Local woman wins oldest refrigerator contest

Posted: Updated:
MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) -

Middleburg Heights resident Mary Schmidt won the statewide "Ohio's Oldest Fridge" Contest with her 1930 refrigerator that was still working and in use.

Schmidt saw the contest, ran by FirstEnergy Corp., and won $1,250 dollars for recycling her antique fridge.

Her parents purchased the fridge when she was a year old, and it has been running ever since. She has used the fridge all her life and even had the original paperwork.

She tied with a Columbus area resident who also had a 1930 appliance.

FirstEnergy customers can earn $50 dollars when they recycle old refrigerators, in addition to saving money on operating costs. Newer models are built to higher efficiency standards and can save around $150 dollars annually.
