SHEFFIELD LAKE, OH (WOIO) -

The police cruiser of Sheffield Lake cop Jim Simone was struck during a traffic stop Tuesday night in the 4000 block of Lake Road.

The Sheffield Lake Chief says Officer Simone pulled over a driver for not having headlights, but then discovered the driver had warrants for burglary and driving under suspension.

Officer Simone, a former top cop in Cleveland, placed the man in handcuffs in the back seat of the cruiser. He then exited the cruiser, leaving the door only open a couple of inches to do a vehicle inventory. At that time, a passing driver slammed into the cruiser and kept driving.

Officer Simone and the arrested driver had some bumps and bruises.

Sheffield Lake police found the other driver, 60-year-old Terry Hines. Hines is now charged with
must use reasonable care when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle, leaving the scene and failure to control.
