Drivers ignore detour signs at Sylvania construction project

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A new roundabout is being added on Sylvania Avenue and Mitchaw Road, but drivers are already ignoring the detour signs.

Construction began Thursday. Drivers were using Timberstone Junior High in Sylvania as a way to get around the construction project, and school administrators are concerned about student safety.

"We do have students that are out here for gym class," said Principal Mike Bader. "They're out here when the weather's nice, all day long. We're very concerned with the traffic that's been going through here, people not following the detour signs."

Drivers are not only not following detour signs, they're also ignoring signs in the school driveways that say "No thru traffic."

"It's imperative that they public does not use Timberstone Junior High as a cut-through," said Ron Myers, traffic operations engineer. "Sylvania Township Police will be monitoring the junior high's parking lot."

The project is expected to take 45 days. Bader says he hopes motorists begin to follow the detour and construction signs.
