Toledo Race for the Cure draws thousands

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

A sea of pink rolled through the streets of downtown Toledo on Sunday morning, for the 20th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Thousands of walkers and runners took part in the 5K event, many sporting shirts that read "Survivor," or "Inspired," representing those that have overcome breast cancer and those who came out to show their support.

This year's race was run in celebration of Kelli Andres of Sylvania. She was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer three at the age of 45. Not her first battle with cancer, Andres was also diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 12. Throughout the year, Andre hosts fundraisers to raise money for breast cancer research through events such as "Confections for the Cure."

The Toledo race was run in memory of Denise Soto of Perrysburg. Soto was a wife, mom, and the owner of Soto Salon. In addition to helping other women feel beautiful daily, she helped coordinate special Oncology evenings where patients could receive complimentary salon services. Soto passed away on January 15, 2011.

The inaugural Race for the Cure in Findlay took place on Saturday, with about 3,100 participants and more than $200,000 raised.

Totals for Sunday's race have not yet been determined.

The majority of the money raised at the 2013 Race for the Cure will go towards breast cancer research and programs in NW Ohio area.
