Obamacare benefits

AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

Linda Gaines has always had great healthcare through her employers, but she has two brothers who aren't so lucky.

"They are on hard times right now, they both don't have jobs.  They can't just run to the emergency room and run up costs.  They have to have a physician who can stay with them and their family," said Linda Gaines of Akron.

That's why she says she's happy that as of this moment, they can go online or call a 1-800 number to finally sign up for healthcare.

"They were raised middle class. They've had health care their whole lives. You never know when you will find yourself in a situation where you don't have health care," added Linda.

As Summit County's Deputy Health Commissioner, Donna Skoda is one of those who now has the large task of getting the word out about how people without healthcare now need to sign up.

"If they have access to a computer, they can go to healthcare.gov.  They should look there first. There is lots of easy explanations about how to get covered or where to start," said Skoda.

There is a 1-800 number you can also call 24-7 to talk to someone who can walk you through the application.

Having health insurance will now be required by law.

"Start early. Make informed choices. It's not going away tomorrow, so you have a couple of months to really mull it over and figure out what you want to do," added Skoda.
