Teen driver killed, father and sisters injured in train accident

RAVENNA TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) -

A teenage driver was killed, her father and sisters injured, in a train accident in Ravenna Township on Sunday evening.

The tragic accident happened just before 6 p.m. on South Prospect Street near Summit Road at a private railroad crossing.

Portage County Sheriff's Deputies tell 19 Action News the teen girl, identified as Sierra Thornton, was driving her father and four younger sisters in the family SUV. According to deputies, Sierra became nervous while crossing the tracks as train approached.

The train hit the vehicle, and Sierra was pronounced dead at the scene. Her father and four younger sisters were all injured.

The father was transported to Robinson Memorial Hospital and the girls were taken to Akron Children's Hospital. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

The Portage County Sheriff's Department and Norfolk Southern Railway are conducting the investigation.
