Editorial: Fitzgeralds' College Hand-Out

Well, there's a new $100 bill out this week with Ben Franklin still on it, but don't tell Cuyahoga County Executive Ed Fitzgerald cause he's back this week pushing his plan to give every kid who enters kindergarten a $100 bill to open a college savings account. He says that if parents are encouraged to save early, more kids will go to college.

Well, the program is laughable when you consider the condition and the poor performance of most urban schools in the county. The real solution for better schools isn't a handout by ambitious politicians. The solution requires courage, coordination, and hard work by elected officials, educators and yes parents.

Also troubling is the expense of this program. The first two million dollars requested, Fitzgerald says over $500,000 will be needed to run the hand-out program. Well, that's government efficiency at work.

When the full county council votes, we recommend it sends this college savings program to a complete and early withdrawal.

Write and let me know what you think. I'm Bill Applegate.
