CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

When the smoke and chaos cleared from the Boston marathon bombing one question remained, who would help the police, fire and EMS crews deal with the emotional trauma of that tragedy?

Well, the answer might surprise you, they would help themselves.

With three people killed and more than 140 others injured during the bombings, the trauma for first responders can be long lasting.

"The event wasn't over for them, it took a few days for the event to be over," Virginia Famolare tells 19 Action News reporter Blake Chenault

The peer-helping-peer method of dealing with trauma can have amazing results.

Famolare was at the Boston bombing, in a slightly different capacity.  "I was there to assist my coworkers," she said.

The auditorium was packed Thursday with nearly 200 local fire, police and EMS personnel, learning as much as they can about this peer-helping-peer method of emergency preparedness.
