NFL superstar running back Adrian Peterson's 2-year-old son has died in a South Dakota Hospital, after allegedly being abused by the mother's boyfriend.
Joseph Patterson was being held on two felony counts of aggravated battery of an infant and aggravated assault domestic. It is likely he will now face even more charges. Police say the injuries were discovered to be a product of abuse when the child arrived to the hospital on Wednesday.
"I should start off by saying I really appreciate all the support that I've been receiving from fans, the Vikings organization," Peterson said Friday afternoon. "This is a private matter and I would ask you all to please just respect my privacy and not ask at all about the situation at hand. Thanks."
Before his son had passed, Peterson had been planning to play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. The Pro Bowler said that football will be part of the coping process for the incident. It is unclear what his status will be for Sunday now.
Peterson is currently leading the NFL in rushing touchdowns.
