CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Mignonne Martin says she's distraught after getting a phone call from a stranger last week.

"It was about 11 P.M. Wednesday and I answered the phone when it rang," Martin recalls the incident.

On the phone,  a man who said he was from Medicare.  He was asking Martin for valuable information, like her bank account number. She had her doubts about the call, at that moment.

He started with his spiel, and it sounded convincing, so she gave her information.

Fortunately, Martin had second thoughts and called her bank.  The bank told Martin the call was a scam and advised her to close her account.

Of course, there is no season for scams, they happen all the time

Sam Pleasant , Director of Public Protection, says scams usually increase when there is a new federal or state law put in place, like Obamacare.

She says elderly people are a big target  because they can be more trusting.

"Because they are of the trusting generation and especially if someone says "I'm with the government"," Pleasant said.

Pleasant says, never give out your social security number, credit card or bank account numbers, ever!

For now, Martin can only warn others.
