MIAMI (WPLG/CNN) – Jury selection began on Tuesday in Miami for the alleged shooter in the 2007 death of Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor.
Eric Rivera, 23, is charged with first-degree murder and armed burglary.
Prosecutors say he shot the NFL player while trying to rob Taylor's Miami home with a group of men. Authorities say they thought the house was empty, but Taylor was home with a knee injury.
If convicted, Rivera faces life in prison instead of the death penalty because he was only 17 years old at the time.
Four other people are also charged in the case; one pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and has agreed to testify against Rivera.
