Police investigating grave offense at city cemetery

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)- Jonesboro police are investigating a grave offense.

Tuesday morning a worker at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center called police after discovering about 20 headstones knocked over and broken at the City of Jonesboro Cemetery, 504 E. Matthews.

"It's just unfortunate that someone thinks that it's fun to go out and do this because you know when people pass away it's a very serious moment for the family," said Jonesboro Parks and Recreation Director Wixson Huffstetler.

The Parks and Recreation Department oversees the upkeep of the cemetery.

Some of the headstones have held together since 1893 but last night some of them were found in pieces. Huffstetler said it's sad that something like this keeps happening.

"Somebody had walked through the cemetery and either kicked them over or pushed them over, a few was pulled out of the ground and there was a few that was broken," Huffstetler said.

According to the police report, the stones had been knocked over on the north side of the cemetery.

"The top part of the headstone which is actually glued to the base, most of them were just kicked over that way so they will be easy to pick back up and glue them back on," he said.

Huffstetler said this cemetery is the oldest in the city so most of the relatives are already decreased.

"The ones that are broken there is nothing much we can do about that," he said. "It's a sad thing because these families have a lot of money invested in these headstones, headstones are very expensive and it's sad that somebody would go out and do something like this."

And for the person responsible for this damage, Huffstetler said to find another activity.

"A lot of people come back and visit their relatives and they don't want to come back to a broken headstone or a headstone that's been pushed over," Huffstetler said. "I just encourage people to please, please don't do it if it crosses your mind and just find something else to do."

Jonesboro Police do not have any suspects at this time.
