USA Baby closes, customers say they're still owed furniture

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Expectant parents said they were blindsided when a well known Louisville baby store closed without warning. Some of those moms and dads say they have paid hundreds, even thousands of dollars for baby furniture which they never got. It has taken customers and store owners out in the Plainview Shopping Center off guard.

The storefront is still filled. But so far, no one can get the owner of USA Baby to give them what they paid for.

"I have no idea if they knew that the store was in trouble, or if they could deliver the goods," said Mike, a father that paid almost $500 for a mattress and box spring on October 5, just weeks before USA Baby shut down. "That's something I would like to find out. If they took our money and had any idea we might not get what we paid for."

There has been a steady stream of customers looking for answers from neighboring businesses. The parents-to-be who paid up front to order furniture now can't get it. Joe Wheatley, owner of Joe's OK Bayou, a restaurant two doors down, said gets calls every few days from customers owed merchandise.

"It was very abrupt," Wheatley tells the customers. "The people that worked there did not know this was going to happen and were told the day of the closing their jobs were lost."

Although the doors are locked, no one's answering the phone, as of November 5 the store is still selling Groupons, with more than 100 purchased.

The Kentucky Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation after they started getting complaints. The best advice for customers with unfulfilled orders is to challenge the charge on their credit card but with delivery times that are longer than the window most credit card companies give to challenge charges, plenty of people will be losing sleep over this.

"It's a big hit for parents," said Mike, who is now currently challenging the charge with his credit card company.

The owner of USA Baby, Lisa Burden, sent the following statement to WAVE 3 News;

"Unfortunately, we have had to close the store due to poor sales. We are heart-broken about having to close the store and have tried everything we could to keep it running. Customers who do not have their merchandise need to dispute the charge with their credit card company."
