Greenville teen taking first steps after losing leg in accident

MUHLENBERG CO., KY (WFIE) -

After the wreck that caused a Greenville, Kentucky teenager to lose a leg, doctors wondered if she would survive. But now she's making a stunning recovery.

Muhlenberg County Hospital is where Rachel Pentecost receives physical therapy and it's this same place where Rachel is taking her first steps with her new leg.

With the help of her physical therapist, and a few drops of sweat, Rachel is walking again. It's unsteady and still unfamiliar, but by the end of Wednesday's session, she was doing laps in the physical therapy unit.

When she isn't practicing walking, she is doing strengthening exercises, also just trying to be a normal teenager again.

Doctors told Rachel she wouldn't stand for nine months. She is only at six months and her therapists can't believe her progress.

Rachel says her inspiration is being able to chase after her six-month-old niece as she grows up.

"In the future, I want to be able to just take her swimming, take her to the park, go down the slides with her just like any normal person would do that has two legs. I'm normal, it's just my new normal. It's wonderful to be able to think that the doctors told me one thing and I'm already beating the odds.  But, I'm back. I'm going to be fully back here soon," Rachel said.

Rachel now wants to become a physical therapist to help others reach their goals, just like she is reaching hers.
