Overturned truck on I-16 ties up morning commute

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Police were out early Friday directing traffic on I-16 eastbound right before exit 162/Chatham Pkwy due to an overturned vehicle.

Officials say a truck carrying a trailer lost control and rolled over shortly before 7 a.m. Friday, blocking one lane on I-16 east between the Dean Forest Road and Chatham Parkway exits, heading into Savannah. The driver was not injured.

Police believe the truck may have had a blow-out, causing the vehicle to lose control and slam into metal rods in the median, before rolling over on its side.

Police had to close both of the eastbound lanes  and allowed vehicles to pass by on the right-hand shoulder to keep the traffic moving, although very slowly.

Traffic was backed up for miles in the area, reportedly past the Savannah-HHI Airpot exit, due to the vehicles being funneled onto the shoulder.

The overturned truck and trailer was removed from the road and all eastbound lanes reopened to traffic shortly before 8:30 a.m.
