Korean War veteran brothers part of a long line of military service

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Monday is Veterans Day, a day to honor those who put their lives on the line and proudly served our country.

On Sunday in Maumee, local vets were remembered for their bravery, including two Korean War vets.

The Long brothers, 81-year-old Cecil and 85-year-old Gene, each served in the Navy during the Korean War.

Neither regretted their time in uniform.

"Because of what we did for freedom, for people back home," said Cecil.

The Longs were part of an emotional, patriotic ceremony at Maumee High School.

It was sponsored by Gentiva Health and Hospice.

An honor guard appeared and each branch of the military was recognized.

"Our commitment is to not only care for veterans but to recognize them for their service and support them in any way we can," said Bobbie Bean of Gentiva.

The Long family has a distinguished line of military service.

Seven ancestors fought during the Revolutionary War.

Gene's even written a book about it.

"And three of them were with George Washington at Valley Forge and one of them came with Crawford when he was burned at the stake," said Gene.

Following generations of the Long family fought in the Civil War, World Wars I and II and Korea.

"I think that veterans have done an awful lot to protect the country," said Gene.

And keep that in mind Veterans Day.

If you see a vet, go up, shake their hand and thank them for serving our country.
