CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

16-year-old Ashley Imbrogno's "Warming the Hearts" project makes fleece tie blankets to comfort hospital patients and seniors in nursing homes. The inspiration came when she was five years old and very sick, in the hospital.

A young cancer survivor gave her a teddy bear, that she named "Hope."

"When I was 8 years old I came up to my mom with the idea that I wanted to do something to give back to the kids in the hospital, like the little boy with chemo gave back to me," said Imbrogno.

The first year, Ashley and her family made 350 blankets.  Since then, "Warming the Hearts" has raised over $50,000 and distributed over 6,500 blankets to children's hospitals, neonatal intensive care units, Ronald McDonald House, and local senior centers.

"And it's just so astounding to see the reaction that they have and the sense of comfort that they have from something as simple as a blanket," said Imbrogno.

Ashley was even a Grand Marshal at Walt Disney World, and is now one of only 50 featured in a book called "I Led The Parade."

"When your kids have an idea, take it nurture it, teachers, anybody that's around your kids, just foster it," said Karen Imbrogno, Ashley's mother.

"It makes me feel good that I could do something to give back, and that during the holidays sometimes people think that it's about them but it's not, the spirit of the holidays is truly about giving what you have received," added Ashley.

The teenager is planning a career in pediatric oncology.
