Ohio State's title hopes dashed in Big Ten Championship game loss

Posted: Updated:

Urban Meyer lost his first game as the head coach at Ohio State, and his Buckeyes lost their chance at a National Championship game appearance. Michigan State defeated OSU 34-24.

The game was a back-and-forth'er in every sense of the term. The Spartans leapt out to a 17-0 nothing lead and appeared to be on track for a blow out. Ohio State could not move the ball, and could not stop the Connor Cook lead Michigan State offense.

Things sparked for the Buckeyes though when Braxton Miller ripped off a 48 yard run in the second quarter. He capped off that drive with a touchdown pass to Philly Brown. The Buckeyes added a field goal just before the half and went to the locker room trailing 17-10.

The Buckeyes scored 10 more points in the third quarter to take a 24-17 lead, they appeared to be on their way to the Big Ten Championship. Michigan State had other ideas.

The Spartans reeled off 17 unanswered points to win the conference title. Two touchdowns in the fourth quarter were the difference. Cook hit Josiah Price for a nine yard score. He was wide open on the play, a play similar to the ones Michigan used against Ohio State the previous week. Jeremy Langford's 26 yard touchdown run with 2:16 to play effectively ended the game.

Michigan State will play in the Rose Bowl, Ohio State will play in a bowl to be determined.
