CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Prison and a hefty fine for a once elusive fugitive who stole millions of dollars earmarked to aid U.S. veterans.

John Donald Cody, a.k.a. Bobby Thompson, was sentenced to 28-years in prison and ordered to pay more than $6M in fines.

He was found guilty in a fraud case that made him one of America's most wanted for swindling Navy veterans out of more than $100M. He also bilked $3M from Ohioans through a bogus veterans charity.

Cody was on the run for more than two years in which he assumed numerous fictitious names and was known to alter his appearance.
