(WOIO/CBS NEWSPATH) -

Federal authorities are investigating a nationwide security breach at one of the country's largest big-box retail stores - Target.

Target says a security breach that involves stolen credit and debit card information may have affected about 40 million of its customers.

The retailer says the breach started the day before Thanksgiving and ended this Sunday, December 15. In a statement, Target says it "is working closely with law enforcement and financial institutions, and has identified and resolved the issue."

The stolen data includes customers' names, account numbers, card expiration dates, and security codes.

Target is advising customers to check their statements carefully, and report unauthorized purchases to their credit card companies.

The Secret Service is investigating the security breach because the agency handles financial crimes. The online report states the security breach only affected customers who shopped in stores, not online.
