CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Dan Darkow, 20, is a junior at Wright State University, who never let his spinal muscular atrohy define him.

The Avon Lake man needed an emergency tracheotomy in May and was placed on a ventilator. Darkow was afraid he was going to be hooked up to the ventilator for the rest of his life.

However, the official farewell to the ventilator was Monday! "Dr. Onders and everyone set my life back on course," says Darkow.

Dr. Ray Onders is University Hospitals amazing doctor who pioneered and implanted a diaphragm pacing system, to revamp Darkow's weakened breathing muscles.

"We can then use this device patient can turn it on stimulate diaphragm allowing diaphragm to contract and maintain its strength," says Dr. Onders, University Hospitals.

Dr. Onders has done the same for ALS patients, implanted the first pediatric diaphragm pacing system and even implanted the diaphragm pacing system for Superman actor Christopher Reeve in 2003.

"It's a complete 180. There's no way without diaphragm pacer that I would be as independent as I was," says Darkow. "Dr. Onders is a miracle worker. There's no one I've met in my life who can compare to what he's given me..given back to me."
