(WOIO) -

I am Lori Cook Safety Advisor from AAA.

Before you head out this holiday season, your friends at AAA would like to offer a few reminders to make your drive a safe one this winter.

Allow extra time to get to your destination if conditions change.   Increase your following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.    Avoid passing snow plows and using cruise control on slippery roads.

And above all, slow down. Remember, posted speed limits apply only in ideal weather conditions.   If you find yourself in a skid, stay off the brakes then look and steer in the direction you want to go.   Remember to keep a winter driving kit in your car.

If you're traveling two or more hours from home, let someone know what route you plan to take and when you plan to arrive.

Should you break down or become stranded, stay with your vehicle.    Use reflective triangles or chemical light sticks to make your car more visible.    And use your cell phone to call for help.

Winter driving doesn't have to be a nail-biting experience.   With a little preparation, you'll be able to navigate northeast Ohio and beyond while feeling safe and confident behind the wheel!   and please, wear your seat belt and designate a sober driver this holiday season.

Thank you.
