Workers install rails, streetcar construction resumes

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19/AP) -

Work on Cincinnati's streetcar began anew on Thursday following a brief pause in the project. The rail will be installed on Friday.

Work began on Thursday with the delivery of a rail for the 3.6 mile line.

Other work coming up will include rebar installation, and work on traffic signals, poles and water mains.

A divided Cincinnati City Council voted 6-3 last Thursday to resume the construction of the city's controversial streetcar project.

The controversial streetcar project survived a vow by newly elected Mayor John Cranley to derail it for good because of the price tag.

The council decided to move forward with the project after learning that the city already has spent $34 million on it and the costs to stop the streetcar could have topped $80 million.

The streetcar is set to be finished in 2016.
