ESPN: Cavs shopping Bynum to Lakers for Gasol

Posted: Updated:

ESPN reported on Tuesday at the Cavaliers and L. A. Lakers are in talks for a trade that would send disgruntled center Andrew Bynum back to the Lakers in exchange for forward Pau Gasol.

Although no deal is believed to be imminent, the two sides would likely want to complete something before the Jan. 7 deadline when the second half of Bynum's $12.25 million salary kicks in as guaranteed.

The move could help the Lakers save more than $20 million in salary and luxury taxes, if they waived Bynum upon receiving him. The Cavaliers would have to include something other than Bynum to make the trade work under league rules.

Gasol is averaging almost 15 points and more than nine rebounds a game, the 33 year old is due to make more than $19 million this season.

Bynum was suspended by the Cavs last week for conduct detrimental to the team. He missed the game in Boston and his suspension is now considered over, but he remains excused from all team activities. The Cavaliers are paying him to stay away as they sort out their options for moving on.
