Dad dies, ME rules on cause of death for murdered Barberton siblings

The father of two Barberton teens killed in a New Years Eve home invasion has died as well.

John Kohler, 42, was pronounced dead at 15:45 p.m. on Friday, January 3, at Akron City Hospital.

Also on Friday, the Summit County Medical Examiner ruled on the cause of death for the brother and sister murdered. 

Ashley Carpenter, 18, died from a gunshot wound to the head. David Kohler-Carpenter, 14. died from gunshot wounds to the head. 

The father of the teenagers and his girlfriend were also shot, but survived. Rhonda Blankenship, 38, is being treated at an Akron Hospital.

Grief counselors are now available at Barberton High School. Friends will hold a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. Friday at Lake Anna Park across from City Hall.
