UPDATE: Flooding brings on evacuations and closes Chagrin River Park

Posted: Updated:
WILLOUGHBY, OH (WOIO) -

For the past few days residents of commonly flooded areas in Eastlake and Rocky River with homes near the river have been closely watching the activity of the ice and water.

With the weather going from rain, snow and sub zero temperatures to warm, almost spring like temperatures, it's no surprise that a flood warning has been issued for northeastern Cuyahoga County and for southwestern Lake County through midnight Sunday.

Water levels of the Chagrin River have risen to levels that have caused police to order some residents out of their homes and others to voluntarily leave before the water gets any higher.

Rocky River Police confirm that they started evacuating residents on South Island and Yacht Club Drives.

Willoughby Police report that the Chagrin River has spilled over its banks and that several roads have been closed. Those roads are: Lost Nation Road between Pelton Road and Apollo Parkway, along with South and North Daniels Park and Erie Road between Gilson and the Eastlake city line.

Although police have not announced a mandatory evacuation, many residents have taken it upon themselves to leave their homes or at the least to move their cars to ensure that they can access them.

Officers say that they will remain in close communication with the residents.

In an effort to keep park visitors safe, Lake Metroparks has closed Chagrin River Park, located in Willoughby and Eastlake, until further notice due to the flooding caused by the ice jam on the Chagrin River.
