CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

After 55 years, the now closed Innerbelt Bridge will go out with a bang. ODOT plans to use explosives to demolish the old bridge in Cleveland.

The old bridge is going down and in it's a place, a new bridge will rise and will eventually carry all eastbound traffic. But there is a lot that has to happen before they start building the second new bridge.

The bridge built in 1959 has served it's purpose. On Tuesday, crews were on the deck using a massive hydraulic ram attachment, called a hoe ram, to destroy the median and to cut holes in the deck to prepare for the systematic process of cutting the slabs of concrete so they can be safely removed from the deck. A lot of activity under the bridge, so safety will be key.

"Each and every piece of this driving surface is marked to a specific size so it can be easily cut out, put on a truck and taken off the deck," said ODOT's Jocelynn Clemings. "So it's a very time consuming process."

By late spring and early summer, the bridge deck will be down and then a majority of the steel structure will be taken down in a controlled explosion. And then another time consuming process, removing the steel from the site will begin.
