Hundreds to be cut from Ford plant in Avon Lake come summer 2014

AVON LAKE, OH (WOIO) -

Sometime over the summer, the Avon Lake Ford Motor Company plant will shut down and retool for a new product line of medium-duty trucks.

The plant is very important to Avon Lake and surrounding cities.  Any changes at the plant will have an impact on this area. So, the city is bracing to see just how bad it will be.

When it reopens, officials say there will be fewer employees, in fact hundreds fewer.

That will be a challenge for the people who run City Hall since the plant generated income tax revenue of $1.8 million last year.

"If we see a significant reduction in the number of workers, we're going to see a significant reduction of income tax which is what we basically clean the streets with, pay our employees...police, fire protection and so forth," Avon Lake Mayor Greg Zilka said.

The Ford plant employs more than 1,800 people.

Avon Lake Mayor says replacing lost tax revenue will be quite a challenge.  Ford has been a fixture in Avon Lake and Lorain County for decades.

"This is a Ford city.  It bleeds Ford.  They've been here for a long time."

Avon Lake could be considered a Ford city, indeed.  The mayor says he drives a Ford and is proud of it.  But, he and many others in the community will have more work to do when Ford makes those cuts this summer.
