VERMILION, OH (WOIO) -

19 Action News has learned that Erie County Health officials euthanized a monkey on Saturday, January 18, after it bit a customer at a Vermilion car dealership on Monday.

According to the health department, the owner of "Brodi" the monkey, took it along for a ride to Pat O'Brien Chevrolet for a service appointment.

While at the dealership, an employee asked to pet Brodi and was bitten on the finger.

After the incident Brodi's owners tried to hide him from public health authorities at a friend's home outside of Erie County.

It was later discovered that the owner was in violation of several of the  state's dangerous wild animal regulations.

Despite a petition on change.org to save Brodi's life, the animal located and put to sleep in order for the health department to perform a rabies test.

Health officials say that dissection of the brain stem was the only way to positively rule out the presence of rabies.

"Had state law been followed, this outcome could have been avoided," explained Pete Schade, Erie County Health Commissioner.

Pat O'Brien Chevrolet is not commenting on the incident, but says it's an "unfortunate situation."
