MENTOR, OH (WOIO) -

After a rash of vehicle break-ins Patty Wilson is reminded to lock her doors when she leaves her car.

Mentor Police are investigating seven break-ins on the night of Friday, January 17 and another six on the night of Saturday, January 18.

"It's scary, very, very scary," says Patty.

The Local Tavern and the Melt Bar and Grilled, both on Mentor Avenue are two of the businesses where cars were broken into.

Police describe the incidents as mostly "smash and grabs".

In the majority of cases people left valuables like purses or laptop computers in plain view inside of their cars.

Officers report that the collective loss is in the thousands of dollars.

At the Hooley House on Reynolds Road an employee thought they saw a break-in while it was happening but because the thieves were so quick they were gone by the time police arrived and in some cases the victims even helped the criminals by leaving their car doors unlocked.

"It's a mistake because often criminals will just try the door knob and you just open yourself to becoming a victim," says Sgt. Richards.

Police have a partial description of one suspect but they don't know if that person is working alone or if they are part of a larger group.

Anyone with information should call Mentor police at 440-255-1234.
