YPSILANTI, Mich. – Jake Kretzer scored a career-high 25 points and Demetrius "Tree" Treadwell posted his third-straight double-double as the Akron Zips defeated Eastern Michigan 78-68 on Wednesday night in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional matchup.
Krezter finished the game connecting on 9-of-18 from the field, including 7-of-12 from 3-point range, to go with seven boards. The last Zips' player with seven or more made 3-pointers in a game was Jami Bosley, who made eight threes at Bowling Green on Feb. 11, 1998.
Treadwell finished with 18 points, 11 boards and a career-high five blocked shots, while Quincy Diggs pitched in with 14 points, seven boards and a personal-best four swats.
As a team, the Zips connected on 46.6 percent from the field (27-of-58) and 52.6 percent from behind the arc (10-of-19). Akron (12-6, 4-1 MAC) blocked 14 shots, one shy of the school record, and had 19 assists on 27 made buckets. Carmelo Betancourt had eight of those assists, a career high for the sophomore.
Karrington Ward led Eastern Michigan (11-7, 3-2 MAC) with 20 points.
The Eagles scored eight early points, closing the gap to 43-27 by the 17:24 mark, forcing the Zips to use their first timeout of the game. EMU cut the Akron lead to nine (47-38) with 12:06 to go thanks to three-straight buckets. Treadwell would push the lead back to double digits at the free throw line as part of nine-straight from the senior.
A 3-pointer by Kretzer and a bucket by Treadwell gave Akron a 56-41 advantage with just over nine minutes remaining. The Zips' lead would hover around 10 points for most of the half, before the Eagles would send the Zips to the line to extend the game in the final two minutes.
The Zips hit 8-of-10 free throws over the final 1:36 to ice the win.
Akron opened the game on fire, hitting its first four shots from the field to take a 10-0 lead, forcing EMU to call its first time out just 2:53 into the game. The Zips would lead 12-0 before the Eagles got on the board at the charity stripe with 14:27 to go in the half (12-1).
The Zips' lead would grow to 17 points (20-3) with 11:11 to go thanks to the shooting of Kretzer. He opened the game shooting 6-of-7 from the field (4-of-4 from long range) for 16 points over the first 8:49.
With the Zips' lead down to 20-9 with 9:14 remaining, Akron scored 13 of the next 17 points to push its advantage to 20 points (33-13) with 4:35 to go before the intermission. Akron would take a 39-19 lead into the locker room.
UA finished the half shooting 51.9 percent from the field (14-of-27) and 66.7 percent from 3-point range (8-of-12). Both teams had 21 rebounds and seven turnovers, while the Zips had 10 blocked shots.
The Zips will conclude their two-game road trip through Michigan on Saturday when they face Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. ET.
