DNA ties career criminal to church break-ins in Westlake

WESTLAKE, OH (WOIO) -

A career criminal has been linked to a series of recent break-ins at the Westlake Christian Church on Hilliard Blvd.

Police tell 19 Action News that John W. Vargyas, 41, has been linked to the crimes by DNA.

A felony warrant for breaking and entering was issued by the Rocky River Municipal Court after Ohio BCI analyzed evidence left at the scene.

Vargyas frequents the Cleveland MetroHealth area, and his last known address was in Brooklyn Hts.

His criminal record goes back to 1994 and includes convictions for theft (both felony and misdemeanor), breaking and entering, probation violation, safecracking, vandalism, attempted escape, tampering with coin machines and burglary in Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties. A number of those convictions stemmed from other church burglaries.
